2016 Greater Ann Arbor Quilt Show

      The local quilt guild had their quilt show this weekend. When we first lived in Michigan (2004-2010), I was a member and librarian for the guild. I had quilts in their 2006 and 2008 shows. It is a non-juried show, just an opportunity for guild members to share what they've been working on. There are also shops to buy from. There were definitely fewer stores this year. My daughter, Calliope, and I went Sunday. Enjoy the pictures. You can see pictures from the last show (2014) here. I took pictures of all the info cards so I know who made each quilt, however no links to their blogs or instagram feeds as that information was not given.

The neat thing about this quilt was that it was embroidered and then coloured.

      The group of quilters enlarged a photograph and cut it into 6 pieces. Each member made a quilt based on their piece of the picture, which were then joined together to make the whole quilt. Neat idea.

     A beautiful cathedral windows quilt reminded me that this pattern is on my must make list. Not sure who made this. It is the volunteer quilt for the guild. If you volunteer in any way with the guild, your name is put in for the raffle of this quilt. Maybe I need to rejoin?

      And here is what I came home with. I didn't end up buying anything from any of the actual stores. Fabric is so expensive and I don't quilt enough to justify the cost. However, the guild had a table of fabrics leftover from their members only garage sale (which would have taken place during the July meeting a couple weeks ago). I filled a bag for $10. Definite theme in what I picked, except for the Christmas fabric which is begging to be made into gift bags.

Quilt Show

This past weekend was the local guild's quilt show. When we first lived in Ann Arbor I was a member  and librarian for several years but haven't gone to a meeting since we moved back 2 years ago.  My daughter and the little guy went with me and we had a good time. Below are some of the quilts we saw and enjoyed.

This really reminded me of my sister's Liberated Churn Dash pattern but didn't credit her. It wasn't specifically in the show. They displayed some of the quilts that members have made to be donated to charity and this was one of them. 

Floyd smiled at this quilt so he got his picture taken with it.

My daughter picked this as her favourite.

I voted for this one as my favourite. I kept coming back to it.

This was the first quilt I saw with this pattern (it will reappear later) and I really like it.

There was part of a special exhibit by one of the guild's quilt groups. It won first place in the American Quilting Society's Ultimate Guild Challenge 2013.

My daughter and I both liked the ladybug the best.

The next four quilts were part of another special exhibit by the Ann Arbor Modern Quilt Guild. I would have liked to take more pictures but their members kept standing in front of the quilts chatting. It took two trips to visit the exhibit to get these pictures.

Here is that pattern again. I liked this one a bit better due to the fabric it used - Charley Harper fabrics. They're beautiful but expensive.

There were several quilts with this pattern as the designer had come to the guild to do a lecture and workshop.

My daughter said I had to take a picture of this one. The leaves are so me, she said. I have to agree with her.

These are the fabrics my daughter picked out (the shop even gave her one free since she was a young quilter).

Quilt Show!

This weekend was the local guilds Quilt Show. Part of the show was a colour challenge that some guild members took part in. We were given a random colour and then had to make a quilt that read as the colour of our colour card. I guess this was done last year at the Sisters show. I got the colour orange-yellow and had no oranges that would work in my stash. My sister and SIL gave me some oranges from their stash and my mom bought me some for Christmas. We were allowed to use the complimentary colour as well. I used blue thread for the quilting instead of adding blue fabric to the quilt.

I found the orange that is used for the circles, which is almost an exact match, in the remnant bin at JoAnn's near the end of last year. I have enough of all the orange fabrics to make a second quilt for me to keep. I might give the other one away - maybe to a sister that loves orange way more than I do. I have to admit I do love my final quilt and am glad I have enough to make a second.

Every quilt member was asked to bring 2 dozen cookies to share at the show, so here's my little helper monkey helping me make peanut butter, chocolate chip cookies. They are super yummy. 

Here he is with his quilt. He voted for it as his favourite large quilt.

It was placed with another blue and yellow quilt. They looked very good together. ( I spent 3 hours helping set up the show Friday morning and actually spent most of that time up on the ladder hanging quilts. I was unsure of ladders when I started but totally conquered the fear by the end).

I love green and purple together. I have to put a green and purple quilt on my bucket list.

My husband and both kids came to the show this year (my husband didn't go last year, I think he went birding instead). My husband walked around with our son and I walked around with our daughter. My husband and I both voted for this one as our favourite large quilt - but didn't know we both did until we walked by it at the end and he pointed it out. I guess this needs to go on the bucket list too.

This is a wall-hanging and not a bed quilt. Those pieces are really small.

I voted for this one as my favourite medium sized quilt.

Purple and green. Love.

It was hard to get a picture of the whole thing, so you will have to imagine. 

My daughter liked this one. It was made by a child and she was unsure if she would be able to make it herself. I took a few minutes and showed her it was just a bunch of squares and rectangles and broke it down by block and row. I think she'd like to attempt something like this for her next quilt.

My son voted for this one as his favourite small quilt.
